1.0 General Description
The Model 240, Universal RS-232 to V.35 Interface Converter, is a power stealing
interface converter that will convert data, clock and control signals between
RS-232 and V.35 equipment. The Model 240 will operate up to speeds of 100 KBPS
and has the DataSpy LCD (patent pending) to help in installation and
troubleshooting. The unit also incorporates a switch that allows the unit to
interface to a DCE or DTE device.
1.1 DataSpy™ Feature
Your new Telebyte product incorporates the patent pending DataSpy feature, an
LCD display designed to provide meaningful information to you, the user. It will
assist in the initial installation and check out and thereafter can be used as a
performance monitor. In the case of a system problem it provides information as
to the status of the local link.
The Telebyte logo displayed on the LCD display indicates that the unit is
powered (see Figure on following page). For power stealing devices such as your
converter, it is an indication that sufficient power is being applied to operate
the device. The LCD display uses less than 1 milliWatt of power.
The data display on the LCD consists of graphical representations of TD
(Transmit Data) and RD (Receive Data.). Each of these signals is displayed as a
bit change waveform would appear on an oscilloscope.
Ordinarily, TD and RD are low or a minus voltage in the quiescent state. When
data is transmitted, the transmit signal is brought high to a positive voltage.
These two (2) signal states are displayed on the LCD by either a low segment or
a high segment. The low segment represents the minus voltage, the mark
condition, while the upper segment represents a positive voltage, the space
condition. The vertical bar connecting the lower segment to the upper segment is
always on when power is applied.
If the transmit signal is in the quiescent state, continuously low, only the
lower segments and the vertical bar will be illuminated. This is an indication
of a constant negative state. If the transmit or receive inputs to the device
were streaming, i.e. in the positive mode continuously, the LCD display would
show the vertical segment and the upper segments only. For those cases where
there is valid data transmission both the upper and lower segments will be
displayed simultaneously. A variation in display intensity between lower and
upper segments will give the user a perception of the amount of data being
transmitted.
The LCD display also presents to the user the status of the following control
signals: CTS, RTS, DSR, DCD, and DTR. These signals are displayed as mnemonic
symbols composed of three letters each on the bottom line of the display. The
presence of the three letter mnemonic indicates that the respective control
signal is high or positive. If the control signal is negative, the three letter
mnemonic is not displayed. The DataSpy LCD display will help verify correct
operation.

2.3 Data Rate : 0 to 100Kbps
2.4 Switches : DTE/DCE switch
2.5 Transmission : Asynchronous or Synchronous
2.6 Indicators : The Model 240 is equipped with an LCD display for data,
5 control signals and power.
2.7 Power : None required - all power is derived from the RS-232
interface.
2.8 Size: 3.3"L x 2.86"W x .76"H (17mm x 11.25mm x 3mm)
2.9 Environment : 0° to 50° C, 5% to 95% relative humidity
3.0 Operation
The Model 240 incorporates a switch that allows the unit to interface a DTE or
DCE device. When the switch is pulled out it is configured as a DCE and will
connect to a RS-232 DTE device. When the switch is pushed in it is configured as
a DTE and will connect to a RS-232 DCE device.
The Model 240 is supplied with a 10 foot extension cable, C25MM10, which can be
used on either the RS-232 or V.35 port. See Section 7 for additional cable
information.
V.35 interface signals include single ended and differential signals. All data
and clock signals are differential while all control signals are single ended.
4.0 Troubleshooting
The following is a list of possible problems that may arise during the
installation:
1. The data being received is garbled?
a) The DTE/DCE switch is not set properly (see Section 3).
b)The equipment that the Model 240 is connected to does not have the
communication parameters set the same.
c) Data and clock signals on the V.35 side are reversed. If the LCD display is
showing TD and/or RD as being constant high or streaming (see Section 1.1) then
connections are reversed.
2. No data is being received.
a) Customer equipment not connected to the 240.
b) The DTE/DCE switches are not set properly (see section 3).
c) If operating in a synchronous mode then clock signals (Transmit Clock,
Receive Clock, and Ext. Transmit Clock) must be supported.
5.0 Pin Number Assignments
The following table describes the pin number assignments for the RS-232 and V.35
interface. The direction shown is with respect to the RS-232 interface. An "I"
indicates that the signal is an input to the converter on the RS-232 side and an
output on the V.35. An "O" indicates that the signal is an output from the
converter on the RS-232 side.
| RS-232 Pins | V.35 Pins | Common Name | DCE | DTE |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | Frame Ground | ||
| 2 | 2/14 | Transmit Data | I | O |
| 3 | 3/16 | Receive Data | O | I |
| 4 | 4 | Request to Send | I | O |
| 5 | 5 | Clear to Send | O | I |
| 6 | 6 | Data Set Ready | O | I |
| 7 | 7 | Signal Ground | ||
| 8 | 8 | Data Carrier Detect | O | I |
| 15 | 15/12 | Transmit Clock (DCE) | O | I |
| 17 | 17/9 | Receiver Clock (DCE) | O | I |
| 18 | 18 | Local Loopback | ||
| 20 | 20 | Terminal Ready | I | O |
| 21 | 21 | Remote Loopback | ||
| 22 | 22 | Ring Indicator | O | I |
| 24 | 24/11 | Ext. Transmit Clock (DTE) | I | O |
6.0 Power
The Model 240 derives all power from the RS-232 interface : data and one control
is required for operation.
7.0 Accessories
Several accessories are available to vary the interface connectors. The CAB435
is a 6 foot (2 meter) cable that provides a V.35 interface on a 34 pin male M
block V.35 connector. The CAB436 is the same except the gender of the V.35
connector is female. The Model 15-1 is a small adapter module that converts the
DB-25 to a female, 34 pin M block connector.
