1.0 General Description

The Model 260 is an interface converter that allows users to link RS-232 and RS-422 equipment. The Model 260 performs dull duplex conversion of data without requiring an external power source.

2.0 Specifications

2.1 Interface – RS-232: Conforms to CCITT V.24 and RS-232, Pins 2 & 3, Transmit and Receive Data. Pin 4 (RTS) tied to Pin 5 (CTS). Pin 6 (DSR), Pin 8 (DCD) and Pin 20 (DTR) are connected together.

RS-422: Conforms to RS-422

2.2 Connectors – Rs-232: DB-25 Male.

RS-422: DB-25 male

2.3 Data Rate – 0 to 19.2 KBPS

2.4 MTBF – 360,000 hours

2.5 Power – Derived form RS-232 interface. Will operate with TD only.

2.6 Size – 2"W x 3.5"L x .75"H

2.7Enviorment – 0 to50C, 0% to 95% RH.

3.0 Installation

The Model 260 is designed to interface RS-232 with RS-422 4 wire devices. The

RS-422 interface pre-sends the transmit signals on Pins 2 (T-) and 14 (T+). The receive signals appear on Pins 3(R-) and 16(R+).

4.0 Operation

The Model 260 is configured as a RS-232 to RS-422 interface converter and as such the unit will perform full duplex conversion of the TD and RD signals. The RS-422 equipment gets connected to the Model 260 through the male DB-25 connector on the pins designated R-, R+, T-, and T+. The R+ and R- are the receiver input into the Model 260 and T+ and T- are the transmitter outputs. When connecting the Model 260 to RS-422 equipment the T+ and T- should be member of one twisted pair while R+ and R- should be members of the other.

5.0 Troubleshooting

To test the Model 260 in the RS-422 mode connect T- to R- (2 to 3) and T+ to R+ (14 to 16). This forms a loop-back connection. Connect the Model 260 RS-232 port to a CRT terminal and hold down a key on the keyboard. If the converter is operating properly the data should appear on the CRT screen.

When the RS-232 input signal is – or marking the T- lead will be low and the T+ will be high. To cause the RS-232 output signal to be – or marking the R- should be brought low and the R+ should be high.

7.0 Power

The Model 260 can be powered solely by deriving all voltages from the data input signal or control signals on the RS-232 side. The signals must be a minimum of –5.5 volts in the quiescent state.
